Halifax Home Insurance: Toy theft hits 22% of parents

Halifax Home Insurance has found that some 22 per cent of parents with children under the age of five have had kids' equipment or toys stolen from outside their home in the last year.

Bikes were the most popular item for robbers, accounting for 18 per cent of all thefts from families with children under five, while buggies, clothes and nappies were also taken.

Halifax notes that with designer prams retailing for as much as £649.99 and some wendy houses costing over £4000, some parents may struggle to replace the pilfered goods.

It is advising parents to lock away moveable garden toys and play equipment such as paddling pools and trampolines, where possible.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Parents can protect themselves from the financial costs of theft, if not the psychological impact, by investing in comprehensive home insurance cover."

Last week the insurer reported that 1.7 million Britons have been living with an unfinished DIY or home renovation project for more than two years
