AA Ireland issues car insurance advice

British motorists have been advised by AA Ireland to check their car insurance policies before entering the emerald isle.

Some holidaymakers may be heading to the Republic of Ireland with the attention of exploring the country using their own vehicle, but they may not have the same level of car insurance cover abroad, spokesperson for the AA Ireland Thomas Brosnan warned.

"If a person is bringing their own vehicle here, certainly they should check with their own insurance company the level of cover they will have while here," he said.

Cars may only be covered for third-party, fire and theft even if they are comprehensively insured in the UK, Mr Brosnan suggested.

Motorists should also ensure they have their own breakdown cover, he added.

The AA provides car insurance, breakdown cover, loans and other financial products and is also Ireland's largest personalised insurance intermediary.
