Direct Line Home Insurance: Damage adds up

The cost of replacing damaged items in the homes can be quite costly, Direct Line Home Insurance research has found.

A survey of more than 2,000 British adults found that the average amount spent mending or replacing ornaments, furnishings and other home contents was £200.

Spilling red wine on the carpet, breaking vases and denting furniture were three common damages reported by respondents.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, explained that such incidents can be costly, inconvenient and frustrating.

He said that the insurer is currently offering free accidental damage cover to new customers who purchase contents insurance.

"When it comes time to renew your police in 12 months' time, customers can also benefit from a ten per cent discount if they are claim-free," he added.

NFU Mutual recently warned homeowners about the potential of garden item theft, which it claimed could be costly for the uninsured.
