10% 'unclear about personal debt'

A new survey has revealed the extent of Britons' ignorance of their own finances.

The poll by CreditExpert.co.uk found ten per cent of respondents had no clear idea how much debt they were in.

Meanwhile, 74 per cent were unable to state how much they had left to pay on loans, despite nearly all of those asked initially claiming to be familiar with their finances.

Jim Hodgkins, Managing Director for CreditExpert.co.uk, advises: "Keeping track of your commitments and planning for the future are always important and in addition to checking bank and credit card statements, you also need to regularly check that your credit report is accurate and up-to-date."

Among those most confused about credit commitments and general personal banking were 18n to 34-year-olds, with nearly a quarter admitting this themselves.

The survey comes as new research by MoneyExpert.com reveals that during the first three months of 2008 the number of consumers concerned about repayments rose from 33 per cent to 38 per cent.
