Halifax Home Insurance: Britons store gadgets away

British homes contain as much a £500 worth of unused domestic appliances, according to new research.

The survey by Halifax Home Insurance reveals kitchen gadgets are top of the abandoned pile, equating to £2.6 billion stored away in cupboards across the country.

Of these the most likely to be forgotten are toastie makers and blenders.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, says: "British kitchens are turning into a graveyard of unused gadgets." He adds they have become "merely decorative items? for millions of wannabe chefs."

Other kitchen concerns raised by the research include estimates that cooks cause £64 million of damage each year with their appliances, usually by failing to read instruction thoroughly.

Meanwhile more than one in ten Britons confess having had a cooking accident or caused damage to their kitchen as a result of copying professional techniques shown on TV, according to esure home insurance.
