Endsleigh warns owners about insurance

A leading home insurer has advised property owners that unapproved repair work could jeopardise their cover.

Currently Endsleigh refuses to pay out on damage caused by faulty design or workmanship or the use of unsuitable tools and materials.

DIY structural repairs or alterations are also not covered by the majority of insurers.

However Rhiannon Harris, a spokesperson for Endsleigh, warned even small jobs could be a claims risk without communicating with companies first.

She said: "We must be advised of any alteration of the risk, so this will include any DIY projects, in order that we may consider the continuation of cover in general."

According to a recent survey by Zurich, 87 per cent of homeowners carry out DIY without checking whether they are insured for the work or any resultant damage before starting it.

A further 47 per cent do not inform their home insurer of major DIY updates they are planning to make to the property. ADNFCR-323-ID-18628135-ADNFCR
