Simon Douglas, head of AA Caravan Insurance, suggested that the proximity of the midlands to the motorway network of the M6, M42 and M1 could be the reason why ten per cent more of its caravans go missing than elsewhere in the UK.
He added that thieves look for opportunities to steal from places where the vehicle is unattended by not secured, such as on the driveway before the owners set off on a trip or at a service station.
"There is a real trend towards particular models being targeted and sometimes, several vans may disappear from one site. They are even craned out and on to a lorry for a quick getaway," Mr Douglas revealed.
In related news, the AA announced last month that the recent hike in petrol prices would have cost drivers a total of £110 million last bank holiday weekend.
