Post Office: Spain best value for motoring holidays

Rising fuel prices in the UK have hit drivers hard, while holidaymakers have seen their wallets take the impact of both a strong euro and high fuel surcharges on flights.

For those who have chosen to take the car abroad this summer who may be concerned about the price of petrol, the Post Office has come up with a list of the cheapest places for a motoring holiday in the eurozone, with Spain coming out on top.

Spain offers the best value across Europe for both diesel fuel and motoring in a hire car and is also the least expensive in the monetary zone for unleaded petrol, at £1 per litre.

However, Switzerland is now the only major driving holiday destination where unleaded fuel costs less that £1 per litre.

Helen Warburton, head of travel at the Post Office, looked at the fall in value of sterling against the euro and calculated that "the UK had suffered the highest underlying price hike - 20 per cent at the pumps."

Last month, the Post Office found that Warsaw is the cheapest city for a cultural weekend away.
