Legal & General: Protection could lessen impact of credit crunch

Legal & General has suggested that with many families' finances likely to be stretched by the credit crunch, they may require protection.

The lender noted that increased mortgage rates, high council tax and rising fuel and food bills have hit household budgets.

As such, Bonnie Burns, product marketing director of protection, stated: "Most families' finances would unravel if a parent died or became too ill to work."

"They are risking their futures by not protecting their key asset - their future income," she added.

Family protection policies provide a monthly income for a set term, should the policyholder die or suffer a critical illness.

Earlier this month, Legal & General said advisors should be recommending protection to their customers as a way to broaden their revenue streams.
