As a result, a total of more than 1.7 million days are lost in delayed return trips as people wait for their replacement documents.
On average, this costs the unfortunate holidaymaker an estimated £131 per person in extra accommodation and rescheduled flights. This adds up to £389 million each year.
The insurer suggests that where possible, travellers use their hotel safe or find a well-hidden place in the room. They should also be discreet with their documents in public, as 10 per cent of passports are stolen from a tourist in the street.
Paul Birkhead at Halifax Travel Insurance commented: "Losing your passport abroad is a guaranteed nightmare and we always advise taking several photocopies of the back page with you, just in case something happens to it."
Tesco recently recommended that in the event of a delay, travellers should ensure they obtain written confirmation from the airline, train or ferry company, giving exact details of the reason for and length of the delay.
