Halifax Home Insurance: Bike owners must be security conscious

With National Bike Week starting on Monday, Halifax Home Insurance has taken the opportunity to remind cyclists of the need to be security conscious.

Recent data from the British Crime Survey shows that a bike us stolen every 65 seconds in the UK, with the average cost of replacing it coming in at £337.

The insurer has come up with a number of ways to avoid bike theft, including making using of special bicycle parking racks wherever possible and always using a secure lock.

It also suggests trying to use racks in well-lit public areas and using hardened steel U-type locks, as cable locks are easily cut.

Head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance David Rochester said: " It is important that people take adequate measures to protect their cycles and also make sure they are insured, both in the home and also when out in public places."

Earlier this week Halifax Insurance announced that it is offering all customers who purchase its buildings and contents cover a £50 "thank you", both now and every year at renewal, provided they remain claim free.
