AXA PPP launches new child private medical insurance

Parents are being offered a new medical insurance policy for their children by AXA for £9.99 a month.

The policy, First Healthcare, is designed for those who may not be able to afford private health insurance for their whole family but want to ensure coverage for their children.

First Healthcare pays for private hospital treatment straightaway if the NHS cannot see the child within six weeks of when treatment should take place.

It also covers early access to consultations with an experienced specialist, out-patient scans, diagnosis scans and cost of accommodation for a parent who needs to stay with a child under 11 in hospital overnight.

Healthcare professionals are also available by phone 24 hours a day, all year.

Parents do not need to give a medical history.

Geoff Salter, AXA PPP healthcare head of product management, said the policy offered "peace of mind" to parents.

In May, the Telegraph and Argus newspaper covered the case of Harrison Smith, a teenage cystic fibrosis sufferer whose family faced losing their home as he needed round-the-clock care.

Imelda Redmond, chief executive of Carers UK, told the paper that transport and hospital appointments could be expensive and conflict with employment.
