AA: Government must take action on floods

The government must continue to invest in flood defences, AA Insurance said today.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, also called on local authorities not to give planning permission to build in high flood risk areas, despite pressure to provide housing.

He said last year's flooding had shown that many drainage systems could not cope with prolonged rain and said authorities needed to assess future flood risks and invest accordingly in drainage.

Flood damage last year led to 180,000 people making claims for over two months, totalling £3 billion.

Mr Douglas said that many people who suffered flooding had no insurance and quoted Association of British Insurers (ABI) figures stating that half the claims came from homes that were not considered to be at risk.

He noted that "last year's events showed that flash flooding can occur anywhere" and urged people to ensure they had a "watertight insurance policy".

The ABI has warned that insurers may not be able to offer flood cover if the government does not ensure adequate flood defences, according to the Telegraph.

Increased risks could make premiums unaffordable, the ABI warned at a conference today.
