NatWest's 2008 student package launched

Students can benefit on rail fares, interest-free overdrafts and money off a laptop and mobile broadband in NatWest's package for the year.

A railcard can save an average of £122 a year, according to the bank, while the negotiable interest-free overdraft goes from £1,250 in the first year to £2,000 in the fifth.

The NatWest student account also offers £100 off an Asus laptop and £50 off 3 mobile broadband.

Students can also receive a free Microsoft Lifecam if they open an account online before October 31st.

A graduate package can also offer an interest-free overdraft for three years after graduation.

Mark Worthington, head of NatWest student and graduate banking, said the package had "evolved" in response to feedback.

Student debt increased by a third last year, according to the Telegraph.

The Student Loan Company said that the amount given to students in England increased 32 per cent to £3.9 billion from 2007-08.

While the government turned to the consumer price index for its official inflation measure five years ago, student loans are subject to the retail price index, which has increased at a higher rate.
