Direct Line: Modifying your car can increase premiums

Car modifications that increase desirability can lead to higher insurance premiums, Direct Line Car Insurance has warned.

Spokesperson Jennifer Culley said that any changes which improved "performance, value or desirability to a thief" would incur higher charges because of the increased "risk, value or likelihood of a claim".

But she added that most insurers will not penalise motorists who make modifications to improve safety or security.

Ms Culley also warned that any modification should be carried out by professionals, as there were "implications that an amateur may not consider".

She told drivers to contact their insurers before performing any alterations to find out the effect on premiums and whether the risk is still acceptable.

Once modifications have taken place, she advised motorists to note them on their policies to ensure they have the cover they require and have not invalidated their insurance.

In March, the Insurance Daily reported findings from confused.com which found that modifying a vehicle could increase premiums by up to 139 per cent.

Last year in May, bull bars were banned under EU law in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by the bars on some 4x4 vehicles.
