Clerical Medical: Pensioner inflation up by 36% in ten years

Pensioners have suffered a rise of over a third in the cost of their goods and services since 1998, new research shows.

The Clerical Medical report found that pensioners' rising costs broke the retail price inflation figure of 32 per cent.

Rising housing costs (69 per cent) were a major factor, such as council tax increases (89 per cent) and repair and maintenance (84 per cent).

The average pensioner's household expenditure has risen 24 per cent since 2001-02.

Clerical Medical chief economist Martin Ellis said that pensioners' cost of living had risen by more than that for all households in the same period, especially in the last five years.

The news came as the Scottish National Party (SNP) dropped its plans to axe free bus passes for pensioners.

The Daily Record reported that ministers had not initially guaranteed the passes would remain as a review of the scheme was launched and bus chiefs said subsidies were inadequate.

But following a Labour campaign which adopted the Record's headline, "You cannae shove your granny off a bus", the SNP announced that the passes would remain.
