Direct Line offers automatic ten per cent extra cover for weddings

Insurance provider Direct Line has announced an offer of an extra ten per cent extension in home contents cover before and after a wedding.

Taking into account the addition to a home's belongings from such items as outfits, favours and gifts, Direct Line offers the automatic extension for the four weeks before and after the nuptial date.

Its Home Insurance and Home Insurance Plus policies both come with the offer.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at the company, said it provides insurance "for our customers when they need it most".

Wedding insurance is often recommended as the average cost of one is now approximately £20,000 and rises on average by £2,000 a year, according to onlyfinance.com.

Marks & Spencer and other providers offer wedding insurance to cover potential mishaps such as damage to the wedding dress or cancellation if the company holding the reception goes bust.

But onlyfinance.com warned that wedding insurance will not cover a bride or groom backing out.
