Alliance & Leicester extends current account offer

A current account with an 8.5 per cent credit interest rate is being extended by Alliance & Leicester.

The offer on the building society's Premier Direct and Premier 50 Current Accounts is now on until September 30th.

Also extended is the ten per cent interest rate on its Premier 21 Current Account for 16 to 21-year-olds.

Research from Alliance & Leicester has found that 73 per cent of Britons have made financial cutbacks recently, mostly due to the rising cots of food, fuel, bills and consumer goods.

It also discovered "switching inertia" with 58 per cent of people never having changed current accounts and seven per cent having had the same one for over 20 years.

British banks allegedly make £2.5 billion profit from unauthorised overdraft charges, the Press Association reports.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is expected to reveal the figure this month.

The publication comes after an OFT High Court victory on unauthorised overdraft charges, but a second hearing is delayed until an appeal against the judgment by the banks has been settled.
