Flood risk agreement welcomed by AA

An agreement between the Association of British Insurers and the government concerning flood insurance has been welcomed by the AA.

Under the terms of the deal, both the government and the insurance industry will seek to improve understanding of flood risk, while more will be done to promote access to insurance for low-income households.

Also, the planning system will be tweaked to prevent inappropriate development in flood-risk areas.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Insurers are responding to the increasing risk of extreme weather and the likelihood that around half-a-million homes could be affected by flash flooding."

He added that, while some householders will see their cover premiums rise, most will still be able to obtain the insurance they need.

Mr Douglas also said that insurance firms are updating their risk assessments, with the Environment Agency providing assistance on new flood mapping that takes into account the impact of flash floods.
