Alliance & Leicester: £100 for switching online

Alliance & Leicester is offering £100 to everyone who switches online to its Premier Current Account.

It is one of a number of incentives to encourage people to leave their "poor value current bank".

Switchers will also receive free annual multi-trip Europe travel insurance, a free agreed overdraft for 12 months and a linked PlusSaver account offering 5.25 per cent AER.

Andy Muddimer, current account manager, urged people who have never switched accounts to research the market and promised a "seamless" transference with the Premier Switching Service.

Research by Alliance & Leicester found that 80 per cent of people have not switched accounts in the last five years, while 58 per cent have never switched current accounts.

A recent report from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) found that current accounts generated more than £8 billion for banks in 2006.

The report criticised banks for not being transparent enough about charges.

OFT chief executive John Fingleton said the market is "not serving customers well".
