Tesco launches three new car warranties

A new range of car warranties with prices starting at £9.90 a month has been launched by Tesco.

The warranties allow customers to protect themselves against the cost of their car repair bills and can be taken out for nearly any vehicle aged up to ten years and with fewer than 100,000 miles on the clock.

Most major electrical and mechanical faults are covered.

Customers can choose from Value, Standard and Finest and are covered at no extra cost while on holiday in EU countries.

Allan Burns, head of insurance, said cars are becoming "increasingly sophisticated".

The importance of car insurance abroad was recently highlighted in the Telegraph, which reported the case of two motorists on holiday who were initially refused their payout when possessions were stolen from their car in Sicily.

Despite having discussed their requirements carefully with their insurer beforehand, the provider initially refused to pay out because the vehicle was UK-registered and Sicily was considered a high-risk area.

The insurer eventually settled after being threatened with the Small Claims Court.
