Research by market intelligence provider Mintel found a seven per cent rise in gross credit card lending in the first four months of 2008, compared to the same time in 2007.
While 64 per cent of people rated themselves as comfortable or managing in 2006, only 51 per cent say the same now.
The number of people with an emergency savings net has also fallen from 43 per cent in 2006 to 29 per cent now.
Senior finance analyst at Mintel, Toby Clark, said people were using credit and savings to meet rising costs of living.
Research by moneysupermarket.com, reported by the Times, recently found wide regional variation in the cost of energy.
Households in Southend-on-Sea pay on average £33.14 less a year for gas compared to those in Inverness.
The website found British Gas Click Energy 5 to be the cheapest tariff available, but it could still vary between regions.
