HSBC cuts fixed-rate mortgage rates and fees

Mortgage lender HSBC is lowering fees and rates on fixed-rate mortgages.

Standard two-year deals will be cut by 0.31 per cent while the booking fee will go from £799 to £599.

Longer fixed-rate loans will fall by 0.16 per cent.

A new 5.98 per cent five-year fixed-rate mortgage is to be introduced, with all customers with an HSBC Plus or Premier account eligible for it. It includes a booking fee of £999.

Andy Mielczarek, head of lending, said that an estimated 750,000 people are looking to remortgage in the second half of the year.

He said: "Lowering our rates by 0.31 per cent means a saving of almost £500 a year for a homeowner with a £160,000 loan."

Meanwhile, finance website moneysupermarket.com has commented on Abbey overtaking HBOS as Britain's mortgage leader.

It said Abbey is still "winning the price war with its best two-year fixed, three-year fixed and two-year trackers coming in cheaper than Halifax".
