RAC advises tyre checks

UK drivers should check their tyres this summer, according to a new study.

The RAC Foundation conducted research into consumer knowledge of tyre condition and found that some three million motorists could risk tyre problems this summer by failing to check their condition.

While 45 per cent of those surveyed said they did not know the minimum legal tread depth for cars - which is 1.6mm - the figure increases to 60 per cent for women.

Sheila Ranger, deputy director for the RAC Foundation, said: "Modern tyres are very robust and failure-resistant, but older tyres that have been stored incorrectly or simply not used for many years can become unfit for purpose through the passage of time alone."

Some of the signs to look out for with damaged tyres include tread separation and discolouration.

According to Tyresafe, drivers should be sure to check tyre pressure, condition and tread depth before setting out for summer breaks.
