Halifax warns of need for lightning insurance

Lightning damage claims are 14 times higher in summer than winter and people should ensure they are covered, Halifax has said.

The average claim cost £1,453 last year, according to the bank.

Its own in-house claims data show 14 times as many lightning claims in summer than in winter.

Potential damage done to homes by lightning include fire, structural damage, loss of power and damage to electrical equipment.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for Halifax Home Insurance, said: "Lightning can strike anywhere, often with little warning, so it is essential to have cover in place so that if the worst happens any cost for repairs or replacement of damaged property will be covered."

The Met Office advises unplugging all non-essential appliances before a thunderstorm, as lightning can cause power surges.

During the storm, people should avoid using sinks, taps and telephones.

This is because telephone lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity.
