Bupa: Cleanliness fears drive private medical insurance demands

Concerns about superbugs and hospital cleanliness are driving demand for private health insurance, according to Bupa.

Its 2008 Health of the Nation survey found that hospital cleanliness is still the key concern among those with medical insurance, cited by 73 per cent as a key reason for buying it.

Faster access to specialists is another motivation (62 per cent) and no waiting lists another (61 per cent).

Over a third of those surveyed (36 per cent) would consider going private if they needed an operation in the future, while 79 per cent of private medical insurance holders would recommend it to others.

The research surveyed 1,062 people face-to-face.

James Daley recently criticised Prudential in the Independent after it decided to withdraw its free gym membership offer on its Health Insurance Plan.

He was commenting on the provider's decision to change the policy's terms and conditions, meaning that holders' gym fees could increase.

Mr Daley wrote: "If you're planning to cut the best bits out of a product, it's shoddy to spend the previous six months promoting these very benefits and then hope that apathy will help you hang on to most of your customers once the dust has settled."
