Times tips on student finances

Advice has been given in the Times newspaper for students on handling their finances during university.

John O'Leary, editor of the Times' Good University Guide, draws attention to the Financial Services Authority's (FSA) Money Doctors programme, which gives students help, advice and a money managing "toolkit".

Available at around 50 universities, the FSA hopes numbers subscribing will double next year.

Mr O'Leary also suggests drawing up a budget and remembering that food prices have been rising.

In addition, students should check they claim all help to which they are entitled.

Last year, 12,000 students who were eligible for government grants did not claim them.

Students who began university last year can expect to graduate with debt of more than £17,500, according to a new survey by Push.

The BBC reported the findings, as well as a National Union of Students poll which discovered that students spend hundreds of pounds more on groceries, bills and travel than they had anticipated.
