Norwich Union: Not declaring drink-driving conviction can invalidate car insurance

Motorists who fail to declare drink-driving convictions risk having their insurance invalidated if they make a claim, Norwich Union has warned.

Spokesperson Erik Nelson warned that drink-driving convictions would "seriously impact your premium" but added that not declaring one could lead to a driver's insurance becoming void.

He said that increased instances of female drink-driving would not increase base rate premiums for women.

Recent research by Confused.com, published in March, found that 2.3 million men were convicted of driving offences in 2007, as were 920,000 women.

Speeding accounted for 73 per cent of male offences and 84 per cent of female ones.

In addition, the Department for Transport found that 3,172 people were killed in road accidents in 2006 while 258,404 were injured.

The AA recently reported that the average car insurance premium rose by around six per cent in the past year to £682.

And research by MoneyExpert.com found that 28 per cent of drivers stayed with their insurers when asked to pay more, while 30 per cent decided to switch.
