Thrifty Scot: Compare loans

Borrowers should always compare loan deals before taking one out because of the wide variance between them, money blog The Thrifty Scot has claimed.

Noting that interest rates, repayment periods and terms and conditions can differ dramatically between lenders, the website urges borrowers to research deals thoroughly.

It suggests the use of price comparison websites and reminds readers that their credit history will affect the deal they are able to secure.

Loans do vary despite being harder to acquire thanks to the credit crunch, it said.

Earlier this month, Gwenda Thomas wrote in the Independent about student loans.

She noted that they are cheap, as students pay interest only at the rate of inflation.

Despite inflation having doubled from last year's 2.4 per cent, Ms Thomas said the loan is "still a good deal".

She also said that students in England starting their courses this year can take a five-year repayment holiday at any time while paying back their loan.
