Direct Line: Extend new careless driving laws to all the uninsured

Insurance provider Direct Line has called for the new law on careless driving to be extended to cover all uninsured drivers.

The new legislation, which creates the offence of causing death by careless driving, comes into force across the UK today.

Drivers who cause death by losing concentration at the wheel can now be imprisoned for up to five years.

In addition, those who cause death by driving while uninsured, unlicensed or disqualified can be imprisoned for up to two years.

Maggie Game, head of car insurance at Direct Line, said the provider welcomed the new legislation but said it did "not go far enough" to tackle all uninsured motorists.

She called for an "urgent review" of the penalties inflicted upon uninsured drivers, stating that they cost Britain approximately £500 million each year.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick said he hoped that the new law would encourage safer driving.

"Where carelessness causes a death it is right that the driver should face tough penalties," he said.
