Tesco: Brits value pets' health the most

More people in the UK have health insurance policies for their pets than for themselves, new research by Tesco has found.

There are nearly twice as many policies for animals than for people.

Last year 23 per cent of UK pets were insured, while only 12.2 per cent of humans had private medical insurance.

This makes the UK second only to Sweden in caring for their pets' wellbeing.

Tesco is now offering customers a 20 per cent online discount for pet insurance, with a further five per cent off if more than one pet is insured.

Allan Burns, head of Tesco pet insurance, said he was unsurprised by the findings.

"We have known for a long time that us Brits are pet mad," he said.

Melanie Matthews, of Halifax Pet Insurance, recently told the Times that anyone taking a pet abroad should bring their policy documents in case they need to make a claim.
