Abbey: Toddlers causing £552 million of damage

Children are expensive but they also seem to be a home insurance liability, according to new research from Abbey.

Its study found that adults are paying more than £552 million a year for damage in the home cause by children.

More than 2.5 million homes were damaged by children last year, with those aged one to five the most dangerous, causing 23 per cent of incidents.

Boys are more hazardous than girls, being twice as likely to do some damage.

And Scottish children wreaked an average of £625 worth of destruction.

Most common was harm done to paintwork or wallpaper, with furniture coming second and broken objects third.

Tony Beckwith, head of Santander Insurance UK, urged people to take out appropriate insurance to protect their homes from children.

In related news for bigger kids, university students in England and Wales have been urged by mydeposits.co.uk to ensure their rent deposit is protected.

The free, impartial disputes resolution organisation told students to find out from landlords where their money is and with whom it is protected.
