AA: Fuel costs cause Brits to abandon bank holiday plans

Britons are cancelling their bank holiday plans partly because of rising fuel costs, the AA has said.

More than half (56 per cent) of motorists polled by the AA said they will not be travelling over the long weekend, with 23 per cent citing the cost of petrol as the biggest reason.

The AA said that fuel costs have risen from an average of 96.69p to 126.33p for diesel and 95.4p to 114.03p for petrol since last August's bank holiday.

It said in a press release: "It is clear that Britons are beginning to feel the pinch and are cutting back on trips out in the car."

The Northern Ireland Consumer Council recently berated Tesco and Sainsbury's for their fuel pricing policy.

The BBC reported the complaint over the fact that petrol cost more at some locations than at others.

Tesco said it compared its prices against others and was "confident" its customers got a good deal.

Sainsbury's said its prices "compare favourably" with others and that variation was at most 2p a litre.
