Lloyds launches new 'Vantage' account

A new current account with tiered interest rates has been launched by Lloyds TSB.

Available to new and existing customers, Vantage is fee-free and requires customers to pay in at least £1,000 a month and stay in credit.

Interest is calculated daily and also applies to the whole amount in the account.

The credit interest rate ranges from 0.1 per cent AER on a balance of zero to five per cent AER on a credit balance of £5,000 to £7,000.

Catherine McGrath, director of current accounts at Lloyds TSB, said customers had been irritated at having a low limit on the amount of money they could earn interest on in their current accounts.

Finance website MoneyExpert.com described Vantage as "innovative".

Website founder Sean Gardner said the account would suit those who keep substantial amounts in their current account, although he noted the rates "aren't exactly exceptional" for those with a balance of less than £5,000.
