The cover provider said that approximately 8.6 per cent of all such parties are held without permission, with £1.4 million of the £16.8 million total coming from this sector.
Neil Laird, manager of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, warned parents to make sure their offspring are well aware of what can happen if they post details of shindigs online at websites such as Facebook, which may lead to strangers gate-crashing the party.
"When such events get out of hand some insurers may suggest that the homeowner failed to take due care of the property and could refuse to pay up," he explained.
The extent of the damage which can be caused by children's parties advertised on social networking sites was highlighted last year, when 200 teenagers caused £20,000 worth of damage to a home in County Durham after the bash was listed on MySpace.
