Madonna, Michael Jackson 'eligible for Abbey account'

Pop stars Michael Jackson and Madonna are now eligible for Abbey's 50+ Saver account, the high street bank has announced.

With both stars celebrating their 50th birthdays this month, they are now eligible for the rewards associated with Abbey's 50+ savings account, which include rates of up to 6.5 per cent.

In the UK, the over-50s have collectively become the most successful generation - with 2007 research published by Abbey indicating that their combined wealth was greater than the gross domestic product of all the countries in the world - with the exception of the United States.

"We launched our 50+ saver account to create an account that reflects the status of the over 50s, offering highly competitive rates to encourage saving for those enjoying the prime of their life," said Reza Attar-Zadeh, head of savings at Abbey.

According to the Guardian's "50 poptastic facts" about Michael Jackson, other celebrities to turn 50 this year include Prince and Ice T.ADNFCR-323-ID-18756591-ADNFCR
