Abbey: Demand for fixed-rate deals triples in six months

Demand for fixed-rate mortgage deals has tripled in six months, according to new research from Abbey.

The mortgage lender found that homeowners are now three times more likely to take a three-year fixed-rate mortgage than they were six months ago.

Of respondents to the survey, 21 per cent said they would opt for such a deal, compared to seven per cent in February 2008.

Now, 52 per cent of people would take a fixed-rate deal, compared to 35 per cent six months ago.

Five-year deals are losing popularity, which Abbey believes shows that borrowers are more optimistic that mortgages will remain affordable in the short-term.

Meanwhile, the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and NatWest are cutting their mortgage rates by up to 0.35 per cent.

Prices on most new fixed and tracker mortgages are being slashed by at least 0.10 per cent.

The number of RBS branches open for business on Saturdays is also going to double from the 6th September.
