UK mortgage approvals 'at their lowest since 1999'

The number of mortgage approvals in Britain has slumped to a nine-year low.

Bloomberg reported that approvals fell for the 12th consecutive month to their lowest point since July 1999.

There were 33,000 loans for the purchase of a house, compared to 35,000 in June, the Bank of England reportedly said.

Matthew Sharratt, an economist for the Bank of American Corp in London, told Bloomberg that the figures showed "a very gloomy picture".

Home loans rose in value from £3.14 billion in June to £3.23 billion in July.

This compares to £9.35 billion in July last year.

A report by the Times found that the market in Wales is quieter.

Peter Reilly of Savills in Cardiff told the paper that there are fewer new buyers.

Liam Bailey, head of research at Knight Frank, said that prices in Wales have fallen "only slightly less than the average", being down six per cent since October instead of ten per cent.
