Uninsured driver crackdown 'will cut premium costs'

A crackdown on uninsured drivers will cut the average insurance premium by £30, the government claims.

The new offence of keeping a car uninsured will be publicised by ministers this week, the Guardian reports.

Owners will be warned by post and face fines and the crushing of their cars if they do not buy cover.

According to the Department for Transport, cutting the number of uninsured drivers by a third would save insurers £764 million over five years, allowing premiums to drop.

But critics said the fine proposed is less than it would be if the offenders are caught driving and cross-checking databases as planned cannot tell whether someone at the wheel is insured or not.

The AA recently reported an increase in thefts of catalytic converters as well as fuel.

According to the breakdown and insurance cover provider, the high cost of fuel and scrap metal values were causing the increase in such crimes.

It suggested keeping a catalytic converter permanently marked and considering protecting a no-claims bonus when renewing car insurance.
