AA: Newlyweds are not planning for the post-wedding period

Newlywed couples should take more time to consider post-wedding finances, the AA has said.

A study by the breakdown service and insurance provider found that half of newly married couples admitted suffering financial strain within the first 18 months of tying the knot.

Of those questioned, 3.4 million said it put pressure on their relationship, with large purchases for the marital home often being the cause of the monetary strain.

Some 40 per cent bought domestic appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers in the first year-and-a-half of their marriage, while 36 per cent purchased home decorations and 31 per cent spent money on buying a house.

Mark Huggins, head of AA personal loans, said that couples often underestimate the real cost of marriage as they focus on the wedding itself.

He suggested researching low interest personal loans before hurriedly entering payment plans for such purchases as domestic appliances.

Easier Travel recently noted that increasing numbers of couples are going abroad to marry to save money.

It suggested using a currency broker for extra savings, especially since large amounts of money are being used.
