Halifax: Stamp duty move is "sensible measure"

The government's decision to lift stamp duty on properties worth less than £175,000 has been welcomed by Halifax.

A spokesperson called it a "sensible measure" and said it would help the housing market.

The move, which will apply to transactions taking place on or after September 3rd 2008 until September 3rd 2009, is one of several measures taking place to try to improve the housing market.

But the Council of Mortgage Lenders told the Press Association that more needs to be done.

Spokesperson Sue Anderson said the stamp duty move "doesn't go far enough in terms of the starting threshold".

Ms Anderson pointed out the low level of transactions this year and questioned whether it would prompt people who would not have entered the market anyway.

Other actions taken to improve the market include free loans for five years on new properties for households earning less than £60,000.

Housebuilders' shares jumped after the government unveiled its plans, according to the Times.

Taylor Wimpey, Britain's biggest housebuilder in terms of volume, rose ten per cent in early trading, while Persimmon's increased by eight per cent.
