AA: Penalties are not deterring uninsured drivers

Uninsured drivers are not discouraged by penalties such as confiscation and crushing, according to the AA.

Andrew Howard, head of road safety for the breakdown and insurance service, explained that people wanting to dodge paying for cover are able to buy a car for less than the cost of the policy.

Mr Howard said that uninsured drivers fall into two categories - those who cannot or refuse to afford it and those with no licence or MOT who subsequently do not care about it.

Uninsured drivers increase legitimate motorists' insurance by £30 to £50 extra a year, thanks to a panel designed to protect people from injuries and damage caused by uninsured people.

Data released by Direct Line last month found that about 200 road users are killed every year in accidents involving uninsured drivers.

Of the 1.5 million uninsured drivers on the roads, just 260,000 are convicted each year.

In addition, motorists without insurance are ten times more likely to have a drink-driving conviction and six times more likely to be driving an unsafe vehicle.
