Thrifty Scot: Be rewarded for credit card use

Advice on maximising the benefits of credit and reward cards has been offered by finance website The Thrifty Scot.

The site explains that consumers can enjoy gains from rewards[-] based credit cards, which enable the cardholder to earn money or other benefits such as discounts, loyalty points and air miles from the card provider.

Customers are advised to choose a card with the kind of rewards they are likely to use and to compare deals, as reward levels vary between providers.

Paying back the balance in full is the best way to benefit from the rewards, as it avoids gathering interest while still enjoying the benefits.

The website warns of "hefty" interest rates that can outweigh the gains if the balance is not repaid each month.

Cardholders are told that regular use of the card can add up to significant bonuses, although cash withdrawals and transactions come with charges and do not count towards the rewards.

Barclaycard recently announced its intention to issue at least a million contactless cards in the UK before the end of the year.

It claims to have more than 6,000 live terminals across Britain for accepting contactless payment, having launched Barclaycard OnePulse a year ago.
