Moneysupermarket.com: Using a mobile will increase insurance premiums

A third of British motorists polled by the price comparison website admitted to using a phone without a hands-free kit while driving.

Insurers LV= and Swiftcover provide competitive cover for drivers without a mobile phone conviction, at £161 and £176 respectively for a 40-year-old man.

But if a motorist has been caught using a phone while driving, the next premium is £248.

The website said they risk not only rises in insurance costs but also a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licences.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that losing concentration from the road "for even a second could be catastrophic".

In related news, Saga has found that more than 90 per cent of drivers are trying to reduce their fuel consumption in the wake of rising costs.

While 54 per cent know to turn off the air conditioning and 46 per cent are aware it is useful to remove the roof rack, 15 per cent mistakenly think spreading the weight in the car will make a difference.
