Direct Line: Uninsured driver penalties need to be harder

Insurance provider Direct Line has called for a review of the penalties for drivers who are uninsured.

After consulting Hansard, Direct Line found that the average fines have fallen from £224 to £185 in the last ten years.

It said that uninsured drivers add £500 million to insured drivers' costs, or around £30 a year to their premiums, according to Motor Insurance Bureau figures.

Direct Line also compared this to the fines imposed on other offences such as not paying a television licence (£1,000) or overfilling a dustbin (£110).

Maggie Game, head of car insurance at Direct Line, said that punishments "must act as a deterrent to those considering driving without insurance".

She said uninsured drivers kill around 200 people a year.

The Guardian recently reported new measures announced by the government to clamp down on uninsured drivers.

They include introducing a new offence of keeping a car uninsured, allowing the police to compare insurance industry databases with DVLA records.
