Water companies receive record complaints

Charging and billing are leading a record number of complaints to water companies.

A Consumer Council for Water report found that almost 273,000 complaints were made during the financial year to April 2008, making an increase of 11 per cent on the year before.

More than half of them were about charges and billing.

Southern Water, which had the greatest increase of complaints at 155 per cent, said it received more than usual after it implemented a £20 million billing system.

It admitted the number remained "high" from April 1st 2007 to March 31st 2008, but said no major problems remain.

According to the consumer council, Southern Water, South East Water and South West Water had the largest number of complaints in proportion to their customer numbers.

Last month, the Times reported how spending plans drawn up by water companies could lead to millions of people facing a 26 per cent hike in their bills.

Bristol Water sought the steepest rises.
