M&S: Students need to consider insurance

The importance of insurance to students is being stressed by M&S Money after the typical value of their possessions was evaluated.

M&S found that the average student bedroom has £718 worth of electrical appliances, £498 worth of clothes, £224 worth of sports equipment and £210 worth of textbooks.

More than half have a DVD player and laptop (53 per cent and 52 per cent respectively).

Just 16 per cent of students have bought their own policy to protect their belongings, although many will be covered by their parents' home insurance.

Steve Price, M&S head of general insurance, said that cover may feel to some students like an "unnecessary expense", although, due to home contents cover, it would not always be necessary.

Cambridge University vice-chancellor Alison Richard has called for greater funding for universities, the Times reports.

Professor Richard said that British higher education is underfunded and will lose its reputation and best brains if more money is not put into it.

In addition, she said, the UK spends less per student than the US, Austria and Germany.
