Tesco: Tell insurers if you modify a car

Tesco has stressed the importance of motorists informing their insurers about modifications they make to their vehicles.

The car insurance provider warned that undeclared alterations could make insurance policies invalid in the event of a claim being made.

According to Tesco, television programmes such as Pimp My Ride UK and an increase in car magazine and websites are encouraging drivers to soup up their automobiles.

Recent research by Tesco Car Insurance also found that 15 per cent of drivers have modified their cars.

But it warned that even alterations that seem simple, such as adding a non-standard in-car entertainment system, can increase a car's attraction to thieves and should therefore be made known to the insurer.

Price comparison and switching service uSwitch has warned that 1.5 million cars are potentially at risk as floods hit the country.

It said that car owners in areas affected by the floods may have their premiums rise by up to 26 per cent if they need to make a claim.
