NFU Mutual: Insurance not a priority for many rural people

Only one quarter of people living in rural areas are saving for their long-term future, according to the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society (NFU Mutual).

Almost a fifth of country people are likely to overspend each month, while 44 per cent do not consider life insurance to be a priority.

Just one in ten see life cover as important for protecting their family and dependents.

Laura Wood of NFU Mutual said the figures are "a huge worry" and suggested that countryside dwellers may think their community means wider family and friends are better able to help if the main breadwinner is not there.

But she called this a "risky strategy" and stressed the importance of life insurance.

In other insurance news, esure has begun to source all its energy from renewable sources.

It began its green campaign in September 2007 and now powers itself through wind, tide and solar means.

Additionally, it has cut its use of water cups and cones, reduced the number of monitors left on unnecessarily and more than doubled its recycling rate.
