Abbey: Mortgages are top priority for Brits

The mortgage payment and rising fuel bills are the new top concern for Britons, according to research by Abbey.

Asked for their single most important priority, 41 per cent of respondents said it was paying the monthly bills.

This beat work/life balance (13 per cent) and having a pleasant home (11 per cent).

More than a fifth (23 per cent) said their home was more of a priority now than it was two years ago, while 3.7 million (21 per cent of mortgage holders) said the mortgage repayments are their top concern.

Phil Cliff, director of Abbey Mortgages, said that economic worries "are definitely being reflected".

The economic downturn is also reflected in the findings for the Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets Business Barometer.

The August survey found confidence in overall economic prospects to be at an all-time low, with only 24 per cent of businesses expecting an increase of activity in the coming year.
